The Couple

There was sparkles between them from the very beginning when Ryan came to Newport, and although Marissa were involved with Luke, she often turned to Ryan. He was very clear that they were too different persons because they came from different worlds. When Marissa finds out that Luke is unfaithful, she turns to Ryan and they fall in love with eachother.

When Marissa starts visiting a phychologist to talk about her problems, she meets Oliver. They become friends and Ryan feels more and more in the way of them. After a while he figures that it's something wrong with Oliver, but Marissa refuses to listen to him. Finally Oliver shows his true self, and Marissa turns to Ryan again but he can't accept that she didn't trusted him about Oliver. Marissa begs him to forgive her, but Ryan feels betrayed.

In the meantime, Ryans old girlfriend from Chino is working extra in Newport. They get togehter for one night, but then Ryan finds out that Theresa is having secrets from him. Marissa tries to be both Ryan and Theresas friend, and when she finds out that her mother have slept with Luke, she run away from home. Ryan finds her in Chino, helping Theresa and Eddie with their engagementparty. Ryan makes her come back home to Newport.

Finally things seem to go well for a change and Ryan and Marissa get back together again. Then Theresa shows up again and is asking Sandy for advise. Eddie is hitting her and she don't know who to turn to, but she ask Sandy not to tell Ryan that she's back because he's happy with Marissa now. When Ryan and Marissa is in the bakery to get the cake for the bridalshower (Marissas mom is getting re-married), they meet Theresa and Ryan can tell Eddie's been hitting her. He gets furious but instead of going back to Chino to talk with Eddie, he says that Theresa can stay in the Poolhouse.

A while after, Theresa takes a pregnacytest and confides to Marissa that Ryan could be the father. When Ryan finds out he tells Marissa that if the baby is his, he wants to be there for it, but he also want to be with Marissa. When Theresa is packing to leave Newport to go back to Chino, Ryan follows her.

During the summer, Marissa has spend it with sunbathing and alcohol. She calls Ryan in the middle of the night but she doesn't dare to say anything.
Ryan lives with Theresa in Chino and is working as a buildingworker. Theresa tries to get them to be like a little family, but Ryan is keeping a distance and thinks a lot of his life back home in Newport. One day, Sandy shows up and asks him to go with him to try to bring Seth home (who ran away when Ryan left). After a lot of thinking, Ryan decides to give it a try. When he's with Seth, he gets a phonecall from Theresa saying that she lost the baby. Seth is comforting him. What Ryan doesn't know, is that Theresa lied because she knew he wasn't happy with her and the only thing to get him to leave her was to say that she lost the baby.

Back at school, Marissa is thrilled to se Ryan again. At lunchtime, Marissa goes home and there she's making out with the yardguy (DJ). It's seems that they have been togehter secretly the entire summer. After school, Ryan goes with her and when she ask her if she's seeing someone she says "No". They kiss, while DJ is standing on the balcony looking hurt. When Ryan is going to visit Marissa later that evening he see how she and DJ are kissing. When they talk later is Ryan angry because she didn't tell him about DJ and she says that he went to Chino and wasn't coming back. Ryan tells her that they can be friends, but nothing more.

A new girl, Lindsay, is at school and Ryan likes her. They get togehter, but it gets a little akward when it gets out that she's Calebs daughter, and Kirstens sister. Julie is offering DJ $5000 to leave Marissa. He breaks up with her, but gives her the money instead because he realized that she was only involved with him to make Julie angry.

Marissa and Summer invites Lindsay to a girls-night-out. Lindsay is insecure in Marissas company and feels a little threatened because of her previous relationship with Ryan. She begins to drink of the liquor Marissa has with her. Ryan is furious for Marissa for getting Lindsay drunk. A while later he apologizes for his behaviour and Marissa admits that it's hard to see Lindsay and Ryan together, because she hasn't really getting over him.
